I heard once that the reason red is used so much in the city of London – in the classic double decker buses, phone booths, Beefeater uniforms… – is because the weather is so often gloomy and grey, it was a way to inject cheerfulness and resilience into the landscape.

I don’t know if this is true or not, that it was a conscious choice, but I do know that just as when you see a yellow cab you think of New York, many of us see red and think of London. I think of that golden-colored limestone and a certain eeriness in the dim light that ironically seems to brighten things.
